Cataluña Artist Voices Support for Arizona Struggles

WAKING UP TO GREET THE MORNING

Raquel Delgado (a.k.a. RaKel Delgado) is a popular and respected performance artist from Barcelona, Cataluña, Spain. She embraces indigenous and anarchist philosophies and embodies the leading edge of protest performance art in Spain. Her work is clearly reminiscent of the oeuvre of our own Guillermo Gómez-Peña. Her own country faces phenomenal challenges in the struggles of working-class peoples against the capitalist-induced fiscal crisis which thrives under the ruse of sovereign debt and imposed austerity. Somehow, despite their own struggles, many artists in Spain are organizing to support the Chicana/o community as we continue our struggles against political repression and cultural erasure. Delgado is known as La Pocha Catalana and she has developed a performance art piece entitled “Kueponcayotl Moztlitta” – Amanecer para ver el mañana or “Waking up to greet the morning”.

This performance piece addresses the imposition of SB1070 and HB2281 in Arizona, identifying these as discriminatory and racist statutes. It also conveys respect for the deep-rooted sense of place and right of resistance of the Mexican-origin indigenous peoples of Arizona and the rest of Occupied America. Delgado describes the project in her own words as follows:

Sin duda, una ley que está cambiando violentamente la vida de miles de familias chicanas que han habitado estas tierras desde generaciones ancestrales y ahora tienen que dejarlo todo. [Without a doubt, this is a law that is violently changing the life of thousands of Chicana/o families that have inhabited these lands for ancestral generations and are now being asked to leave it all.]

This displacement from our native lands is not going to happen. As the Chicana/o protestors have said: Aquí estamos y no nos vamos[We are here and we are not leaving.]

From Barcelona, Delgado raises her voice in shared defiance and solidarity for the defense of Mexican and Chicana/o peoples. This creative performance is accompanied by original music from the group, Aztlán Underground.

The crew of Ancatv, as a medium of cultural communication, social and multicultural, united behind this cause to realize this audiovisual production to share with the world.

El próximo 10 de Junio se celebrará el festival poético Floricanto de Barcelona. Será el segundo encuentro Chicano-Charnego que se celebra en la ciudad condal, en el que poetas chicanos y poetas de Barcelona compartirán escenario, un momento especial de intercambio cultural en el que mandaremos mensajes de apoyo y solidaridad al pueblo chicano ya que tras la política racista que está llevando a cabo el estado de Arizona (USA) y siguiendo la línea de SB1070, con la ley HB2281 Arizona ha eliminado las carreras de Chicano Studies y Ethnic Studies, y está censurando a historiadores, escritores y poetas como Rudy Acuña, Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales, Gloria Anzaldúa, Sandra Cisneros, Luis Alberto Urrea, Carmen Tafolla, Alurista, o Lorna Dee Cervantes entre otros.

Contaremos con tres escritores chicanos:
Xanath Caraza, escritora y poeta. Ha publicado su obra en http://kansascity.americanowandhere.org/, Revista Zona de Ocio, Circulodepoesia.com, Pegaso of the University of Oklahoma 2010 y 2009, Pilgrimage Magazine, Quercus Review, Thorny Locust, Antique Children, La Bloga, Latino Poetry Review Blog, Present Magazine.com, El Cid, Utah Foreign Language Review, ... También ha publicado en las siguientes antologías: Woman’s Work: The Short Stories (Girl Child Press, 2010), Cuentos del Centro: Stories from the Latino Heartland (Scapegoat Press, 2009), Primera Página: Poetry from the Latino Heartland (Scapegoat Press, 2008), y Más allá de las fronteras (Ediciones Nuevo Espacio, 2004). El próximo año se publicará su obra más reciente en: Nahulliandoing Dos. Poetry Anthology in Nahuatl, English, and Spanish (Aztlan Libre Press) y Palabra A Magazine of Chicano & Latino Literary Art. Es miembro del Latino Writers Collective of Kansas City, Con Tinta Advisory Board, y miembro del Planning and Programming Committee of The Writers Place también en Kansas City).

Santiago R. Vaquera Vásquez, nació en California, Estados Unidos en 1966, hijo de padres mexicanos. Después de graduarse en Artes Plásticas y Letras, hizo sus estudios doctorales en la Universidad de California, Santa Barbara. Ha trabajado en
Texas A&M y en Dartmouth College. En la actualidad se desempeña como Senior Lecturer de Literatura Latinoamericana y desde julio de 2007 como Assistant Professor, en el Department of Spanish and Portuguese de la Universidad de Iowa. Ha publicado cuentos en revistas californianas, mexicanas, y en la revista literaria de Barcelona Paralelo Sur. También ha publicado en las antologías Líneas aéreas (1998), Se habla español (2000) y En la frontera: Il migliori racconti dalla letteratura chicana (2008).

José B. Gonzalez, ha publicado sus poemas en diversas antologías y revistas. Galardonado con el New England Association Teachers of
English Poet of the Year Award y es co-editor de Latino Boom:
An Anthology of U.S. Latino Literature and LatinoStories.Com. Próximamente publicará su primer poemario con la editorial Bilingual Press.

En cuanto a los poetas de Barcelona, contaremos con diferentes colectivos como: Delaonion, con laia lópez, Álex chico, Juan Vico, Iván Humanes y Jordi Corominas. Sopa de poetes, con Óscar Solsona, Mariano Martínez y Pepe martell. También contaremos con algunos miembros del colectivo ACOLITE (Associació Colomenca de Literatura) de Santa Coloma de Gramenet, entre ellos: Joan de la vega, Beatriz Patraca, Angel Pla, Rubén Pla, Mateo Rello, Rodolfo del Hoyo y José Antonio Arcediano.... además de los poetas Maribel Sánchez del programa de literatura Veus anònimes de Ràdio sabadell, Luis Vea, y Pepa Ortiz. También contaremos con La maldita Música y la puta poesía (Cysko Muñoz y Silvia Rodríguez) y VisionesPanoramik, dos grupos que combinan música en directo con poesía.
Floricanto de Barcelona estará dirigido por red 927 con José Luis Cabeza (Payaso Manchego) y Elisabet Fernández, y Raquel Delgado (Pocha Catalana).
Será la primera vez que se celebra un Floricanto en Barcelona, y estamos seguros de que no será el último. Los paralelismos entre ambas culturas híbridas nos aseguran una noche mestiza llena de poesía, o como dirían los aztecas, una noche llena de flores y cantos.

Happy New Year! New beginnings. New studio space. Great series of upcoming exhibitions. Last year  was completed with four performances around Chicago, one - two man show with Miguel Cortez, and participated in three Art Fairs. I was a member of the Tamalli Space Charros Collective which earned the group the Propeller Fund Grant.

Feliz Ano Nuevo! Nuevos comienzos, un nuevo taller, y una serie de exposiciones para este ano. El pasado ano fue una trayectoria de cuatro performances en la ciudad de Chicago, una exposicion Dueto con Miguel Cortez, tambien presentado obra en tres ferias de arte. Miembro del colectivo Tamlli Space Charros cual el mismo fue becado por el Propeller Fund.

I have been always concern where our food come from, and I am please to inform people in the Midwest of the US about a farm co-op Called Angelic Organics. This locally grown farm, is an exceptional community supported agriculture Farm. The history can be seen in the movie "The Real Dirt on Farmer John" it is a great History. The question for everyone, How can we expect to leave a better world behind? If we keep supporting the large corporations and keep being blindfolded, of the damage that we are creating to the earth.
